Appearance: 6ft, slim and fit, without being overly muscular, quite fair skinned with pale blue-grey eyes and thick sandy hair worn short. Strong, square and determined jaw. Sometimes has a little-boy-lost look about him.
Personality: A genuinely 'nice' guy. All he wants to do is find the right person to settle down with and start a family, although the secrecy of his job has been a barrier to this. Very smart, brilliant in fact, and is one of the top five scientists in the world in his sphere. Tends to find the lighter side of most situations, and is the kind of guy you would want beside you in a crisis. Very tough when need be, very self assured and calm. Rarely loses his temper and when he does it's forgotten about almost instantly. Doesn't bear grudges, and has the ability to see both sides of a story. He is a very fair man, sometimes too fair, some would say soft, but he knows what's right, and he stands up for what he believes in.

History: Mark had quite a priviledged upbringing, born to wealthy parents, his father was a lawyer and his mother a University professor. As a child Mark displayed an aptitude for physics and was encouraged to follow it through. Sailed through school and college, went on to study Astro-Physics and was quickly snapped up by the Ministry of Defence. From there he was head-hunted by the Stargate program and continued his work at Area 52, quickly becoming one of the world's formost experts on gate technology.
Mark has had one serious relationship, while he was still in college, with a girl he met there. They moved into digs together, were together for over a year, until one day Mark came home early to find her in bed with his best friend. Since then he gets annoyed with himself for still seeing the best in people, he knows he shouldn't trust so easily but he can't help, himself. He wants to believe in fairy tales. He has always been something of a gentleman anyway, enjoying the excitement of 'courting' a woman, and since the failure of his relationship he has tended to take things even slower, something which has led one or two women to assume he's not interested and drift away.
He and Katee Thrace met randomly at the SGC a couple of years ago, and for Mark it was love at first sight. She was beautiful, funny, sassy, and strong, something he had always admired in women. He tried to take things slowly with her, but Thrace wasn't used to that and so things progressed quicker than he had intended, ending up with the pair of them getting drunk in her room one night (her idea, not his) and things getting out of hand. Mark thought that they had something special, and when she declared she was pregnant he was all for settling down. She however had different ideas and once again Mark was left feeling let down by the female population in general and Katee in particular.
After it became clear that Thrace (in Mark's mind at least) was far more interested in going out and getting drunk and laid than looking after their daughter he took matters into his own hands and sought custody. He won on the grounds that his job was far more stable and he was around more, and also the fact that Thrace didn't argue, and so Molly has lived with him ever since. His mother, now widowed, takes care of the child while Mark is at work.
Strengths/Weaknesses: Very single-minded when it comes beliefs and morals, but also open-minded enough to know that his is not the only way of thinking. A strong character, good in a crisis as he can think on the run and make snap decisions. Rarely loses his temper, and doesn't sulk or bear a grudge, which is why it frustrates him so much that he feels the way he does about Thrace. He doesn't want to hate her, it isn't in his nature to hate, but he cannot find it in himself to forgive her for the way she has treated him and the way he feels she treats Molly.
He can sometimes be too idealogical, wanting things to be just so and to go his way, the way he believes they should, without taking into consideration any potential problems. He believes that if he wants something badly enough he will get it, which sometimes works quite well when it comes to work situations, but other times leaves him feeling very frustrated when people don't play along. Again, another reason why he is so confused and annoyed with Thrace. He thinks he should be able to talk her into loving him and wanting to settle, and can't understand why she wouldn't want to having had a child together.

Coolio! Yeah, I know she does love her. Mark knows she does too deep down, but he can't understand how she can act the way she does and not want to settle down and play happy families with the two of them. But yeah, wicked ;D
