This role play is set in Middle-Earth, after the books and movies. Aragorn never took up the throne, and disappeared back into the wilderness after the ring was destroyed. Boromir never died, and neither did his father Denethor, who still remains steward of Gondor, although he likes to call himself King these days.
Elves are few and far between, the majority of them having sailed from the Grey Havens into the West. The few who have been left behind are secretive, solitary creatures, although still a proud and arrogant race.
The Rohirrim are gradually rebuilding their lands and settlements, although many of them now reside in Gondor, while the dwarves have gone back to their underground domains on the whole.
Hobbits still live peacefully in The Shire, not troubling anyone much.
Sauron still lives, and still has a few loyal followers, who are busy searching for a way to make the evil lord whole once more (sound familiar...? *cough* Voldemort *cough*)
A strange thing has recently been discovered... a great ring, with symbols around the edge, which two weeks ago suddenly lit up and from its center there bust forth a vortex of water. Strange travelers stepped out of the pool, the like of which had never been seen before on Middle-Earth, and proceeded to explore. The activity alerted the eye of Sauron, and he was displeased to see strangers who in his mind could be strong enough to overcome him. These strangers left, and for a while all was quiet, but then the great ring came to life once more, and five more travelers came through. This was all too much for Sauron, who destroyed the device beside the ring, preventing these travelers from returning, though unbeknown to him others could still come through.
